Happy Tuesday! This week’s Top Ten Tuesday prompt is books I want to read again. There aren’t many books that I make a point to reread on the regular, but I do occasionally reread favourites or books that left a lasting impression.
Featured in the header: Forbidden City by Muriel Molland Jernigan, my most reread and oldest physical book. This one has a special place in my heart. My copy belonged to my grandma and has her writing on the inside cover. It was one of the books that launched a decade-long obsession with historical fiction in my teens. The final scene was formative and still regularly pops out of my subconscious to wreak havoc on my emotions.
(And yet… I had no idea until today that my copy was missing a dust jacket and cover illustration?! Thanks, google.)
The Scorpio Races, Maggie Stiefvater
Maggie Stiefvater is one of my favourite authors, The Scorpio Races is my favourite of her books, and this mood-swingy Canadian not-quite-fall-not-quite-winter weather has got me thinking about the atmosphere of this book. Need to track down a physical copy for my shelves and read it again.
Bunnicula, Deborah and James Howe
Did you have an obsessive animal stage as a child? I was all about rabbits, so Bunnicula was unsurprisingly one of my childhood favourites. I’ve been holding onto a copy since my daughter was born to read together and she’s just about the right age.
Master of One, Jaida Jones and Dani Bennett
So, yes, I did just finish reading this one two weeks ago… But I have a bad case of book hangover and keep thinking about the characters, the world, and how there are (so far) no solid details about a sequel.
The Lotus Palace, Jeannie Lin
Read this last year and gave it 3 stars… having recently finished the third novel in the series, however, I feel like it deserves a higher rating now that I better understand the characters and the social constraints that bound their relationships, both romantic and platonic.
How to Write an Autobiographical Novel: Essays, Alexander Chee
This one takes the award for the most highlighted sections of any book I read this year. I’d like to go back and reread a little at a time – give each essay my full attention and savour Chee’s gorgeous writing style.
Mother Night, Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Vaguely political motivation here, but this feels like a relevant book to reread in an age where there’s so much pushback against consequences for mouthpieces of hatred and division.
Finally, books I need to reread because there are more books in the series, but I can’t remember enough about the first book to jump back in.

It’s nice to see the ToG series on other lists. I almost feel guilty for liking SJM books so much since she gets so much hate on twitter these days!
I’ve seen a lot of hype around Master of One lately, too. I’ll need to add it to my Goodreads!

Oh no, I had no idea SJM was so contentious! I don’t use twitter often, but her books pop up a lot on bookstagram, and most times it’s in a positive context… it’s wild how differently the reaction to something can vary between social media platforms. I enjoyed the first three ToG books and eventually want to start ACoTaR as well.
I would definitely recommend Master of One! The authors have a real gift for writing memorable characters and their books are a lot of fun.
The Scorpio Races would be fun one to reread. I loved that book.
I’m looking forward to it – kind of bummed, though, that I missed rereading it in November!
