Top Ten Tuesday: January 5th 2021

Happy Tuesday – and happy new year! Still working on end-of-2020 blog stuff; December was four weeks of nonstop activity followed by a solid week of recovery (or: lounging around reading in pajamas). On the plus side I feel refreshed and ready to tackle a new year!

This week’s prompt is most anticipated releases for the first half of 2021. I’m excited about these books, but there’s no guarantee I’ll get around to any of them in a timely fashion (considering that some of these are the third in a series where the second book is still a TBR… #bookishproblems).

In the header: Last Night at the Telegraph Club, Malinda Lo (January 19th)

Seventeen-year-old Lily Hu can’t remember exactly when the question took root, but the answer was in full bloom the moment she and Kathleen Miller walked under the flashing neon sign of a lesbian bar called the Telegraph Club.

America in 1954 is not a safe place for two girls to fall in love, especially not in Chinatown. Red-Scare paranoia threatens everyone, including Chinese Americans like Lily. Winter’s Orbit, Everina Maxwell (February 2nd)

Prepped, Bethany Mangle (February 23rd)

Always be ready for the worst day of your life. This is the mantra that Becca Aldaine has grown up with. Her family is part of a community of doomsday preppers, a neighborhood that prioritizes survivalist training over class trips or senior prom. They’re even arranging Becca’s marriage with Roy Kang, the only eligible boy in their community. Roy is a nice guy, but he’s so enthusiastic about prepping that Becca doesn’t have the heart to tell him she’s planning to leave as soon as she can earn a full ride to a college far, far away.

Then a devastating accident rocks Becca’s family and pushes the entire community, including Becca’s usually cynical little sister, deeper into the doomsday ideology. With her getaway plans thrown into jeopardy, the only person Becca can turn to is Roy, who reveals that he’s not nearly as clueless as he’s been pretending to be.

When Roy proposes they run away together, Becca will have to risk everything—including her heart—for a chance to hope for the best instead of planning for the worst.

The Unbroken, C.L. Clark (March 23rd)

The Next Everest: Surviving the Mountain’s Deadliest Day and Finding the Resilience to Climb Again, Jim Davidson (April 20th)

On April 25, 2015, Jim Davidson was climbing Mount Everest when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake released avalanches all around him and his team, destroying their only escape route and trapping them at nearly 20,000 feet. It was the largest earthquake in Nepal in eighty-one years and killed nearly 8,900 people. That day also became the deadliest in the history of Everest, with eighteen people losing their lives on the mountain.

After spending two unsettling days stranded on Everest, Davidson’s team was rescued by helicopter. The experience left him shaken, and despite his thirty-three years of climbing and serving as an expedition leader, he wasn’t sure that he would ever go back. But in the face of risk and uncertainty, he returned in 2017 and finally achieved his dream of reaching the summit.

The Nobleman’s Guide to Scandal and Shipwrecks (Montague Siblings #3), Mackenzi Lee (April 27th)

The sole heir to his family’s fortune, Adrian Montague desperately wants to be free—from his father’s high expectations; the grief of losing his beloved mother; and the constant war being waged inside his mind. Adrian was diagnosed with hysteria at a young age and it’s always been kept a secret. But when he has a breakdown at his engagement party, the public learns Adrian’s worst fear: he might not be fit to run the Montague estate.

Thankfully, Adrian is given an opportunity to avoid the impending scandal: a trip to the Caribbean to claim the last of his mother’s possessions. Mister Impossible (Dreamer Trilogy #2), Maggie Stiefvater (May 18th)

The stakes have never been higher as it seems like either the end of the world or the end of dreamers approaches.

Subtle Blood (Will Darling Adventures #3), K.J. Charles (June 23rd)

Will Darling is all right. His business is doing well, and so is his illicit relationship with Kim Secretan–disgraced aristocrat, ex-spy, amateur book-dealer. It’s starting to feel like he’s got his life under control.

And then a brutal murder in a gentleman’s club plunges them back into the shadow world of crime, deception, and politics. Worse, it brings them up against Kim’s noble, hostile family, and his upper-class life where Will can never belong.
